New Mexico Contractor License Guide

In New Mexico, the New Mexico Regulations and Licensing Department is responsible for the licensing of all contractor licenses. Regarding general contractor licenses, applications and examinations are handled by PSI.

Determine the Type of Contractor License You Need

  • General Contractor - several general license types are available, including:
    • Contractors
    • Residential
    • Electrical

Note: Prior to applying, determine what classification of license you require. If you are uncertain of the proper classification, complete the Classification Determination Form and submit it to PSI along with a detailed description of the work to be performed. A written response will be mailed or faxed to you.

Journeyman electrical licenses have reciprocity with most states. Reciprocity for other general contractor licenses are considered on a case by case basis.

Pass Examination

Several types of examinations are available for general and manufactured housing licenses, depending on the license type you are applying for. For more information on examinations, requirements and fees, visit the PSI website.

Fulfill Requirements and Obtain Required Documents

General Contractor License:

  • Check with PSI to make sure that the name you intend to use on your license is available. State laws prohibits the issuance of licenses with the same or similar name.
  • Copy of valid qualifying party certificate, or copy of the exam score report showing passing scores on exams and applicable classifications. You may submit an official transcript showing passing grades on business and law courses by a CID approved school, instead of passing scores on these exams.
  • Proof of current New Mexico Tax ID number application including an official stamp or registration certificate. Must be issued in the exact name shown in the application. For more information, visit the New Mexico Taxation and Revenue Department website or call (505)-827-0700.
  • Proof of registration with the New Mexico Secretary of State if your business is a corporation, limited partnership, LLP or LLC. Must be issued in the exact name as shown on application.
  • Workers compensation insurance is required of all licensees. If you are a sole proprietor with no employees, you may be exempt from this requirement. Please visit the New Mexico Workers Compensation Administration website for more details.

Note: Depending on the type of contractor license you are applying for, requirements and documents may vary slightly. Also, if you have pending administrative or disciplinary actions with CID, are not in compliance with child support or workers’ compensation laws, or are under investigation for unlicensed activity, you may not be eligible for a license and your application may be placed on hold pending resolution of the issue(s).

Contractor Insurance

There are several types of insurance coverages that are recommended for contractors, but the recommended coverage will vary based on your operation.

Manufactured Housing Contractor License:

  • Copy of current New Mexico Taxation and Revenue Department registration and current tax ID number.
  • A signed and notarized Certificate of Qualifying Party form.
  • A financial statement signed and notarized. You can find a sample form here.
  • Depending on the manufactured housing license type you are applying for, you may be required to submit a installer/repairman warranty. The sample form may be used as a guide.
  • Three reference letters from a (1. Financial institution, 2. Individual or Firm for whom you have worked, 3. Character reference)
  • If you are an out-of-state corporate installer, you must complete the affidavit (consent to Service of Process) which can be found within the application.
  • A Statement of Authorization and Release of Information form which can be found within the application.
  • Copy of your exam scores.
  • Depending on the type of manufactured housing contractor license you are applying for, you are required to meet a certain amount of work experience. For more information regarding the requirement, please see the work experience verification form, which you are also required to submit along with your application.

Obtain Your Contractor License Bond

You must obtain an original New Mexico contractor license bond for general contractor and manufactured housing contractor license. The New Mexico surety bond must be the original document signed by the applicant in the amount of $10,000, with the power of attorney attached and your name listed as principal. You cannot list the principal as a company or business.

Submit Your New Mexico Contractor License Application

How to fill out your application

Print clearly in blue or black ink only and use all capital letters. Complete packets must be delivered by hand or mail. Faxed or emailed forms will not be accepted.

Note: For general contractor applications, Include a self-addressed envelope large enough to fit your application and supporting documents. The envelope will be used to mail back to you a rejected application, or to send your new license if application is accepted.

Licensing and Application Fees

General Contractor Licenses: $30 application fee

Make all checks or money orders payable to PSI. Walk-in payments may be made by cash, personal check, company check money order, cashiers check, VISA, MasterCard or American Express. Manufactured Housing Contractor License: $200 application fee
