How to Get a New Jersey Collection Agency License

In New Jersey, entities acting as a collection agency – or engaged in the business of collecting and receiving payments for others – are required to file a Collection Agency Bond application. The bond application must be filed annually.

The New Jersey Department of the Treasury (Division of Revenue and Enterprise Services) regulates debt collection activity and reviews the collection agency bond applications.

Fulfill Requirements and Obtain Required Documents

Apart from a completed Collection Agency Bond application form, applicants are also required to complete the following:

 

  • Certificate of Business Formation : Applicants (including out-of-state entities) must file organizational documents with the State. These documents must be on file with the State prior to submitting the bond application.

A Certificate of Business Formation is required of all corporations, LLCs, limited liability partnerships, and limited partnerships. The filing may be done online via the New Jersey Division of Revenue Online Business Formation page .

All Collection Agency applicants are required to furnish and maintain a surety bond.

Application Fees

All fees must be paid via check made payable to the State Treasurer of New Jersey. These fees must be submitted along with the application.

Submit Your Collection Agency Bond Application

Mail your completed bond application together with the fees and any applicable documentation. Please note that the NJ Licensing Board reviews Collection Agency applications 4 times a year: January, April, July, and October. Your documentation must be received by the first of the month in which the applications are reviewed.
