Understanding how to get a car dealer license in Alaska is simpler than most states. The entire auto dealer license process is handled by the Alaska Division of Motor Vehicles and requires only four basic steps. In short, simply contact them to get an application package, follow the instructions, get a surety bond, and you’re all set to receive your dealership license and open for business. Here’s what you’ll need to do:

Determine Which Type of License You Need:

  • Motor Vehicle Dealer
  • Buyer’s Agent

1

Request an Application and Information Packet

The DMV will provide you with a comprehensive license application and information packet in person or by mail. If you decide to request your packet by mail, be sure to include your name and mailing address.

In Person:

1300 West Benson Boulevard, Anchorage – Dealer/Fleet Unit

Mail:

State of Alaska
Division of Motor Vehicles
ATTN: DEALER/FLEET
1300 W Benson Boulevard STE 300
Anchorage, AK 99503-3691

2

Obtain Your Auto Dealer Bond

You’ll need to submit a notarized surety bond to the DMV along with your application.

Bond Amount Required:
  • $50,000 if you sell motor vehicles
  • $25,000 if you sell motorcycles only

Note: You don’t need a bond if you are a boat dealer.

3

Meet Additional Requirements

Depending on your location, you may be required to obtain a business license and/or other state licensing. You may also need proof of insurance and an approval of the business site. You can contact your local DMV for more information.
