Florida Lost Car Title Guide

If you don’t have a certificate of title in Florida, and can’t otherwise prove ownership of the vehicle through a court decision or other means, there is a specific procedure to obtain a bonded title in Florida. In this case, the bond acts as a guarantee for the State of Florida that your ownership claim is genuine. This guide walks you through all the steps you’ll need to complete to get this title.

The entire application process is handled by the Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles (FLHSMV) Division of Motorist Services. The application is available on their website. You can find your nearest office of the FLHSMV on their location page. Each location has a phone number where you can call for any questions you may have.

Note: You cannot apply for a Florida bonded title if your vehicle has any security interests or liens on it.

Along with a completed copy of the application linked above, you’ll need a completed Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) and Odometer Verification Form. This form must be notarized.

First, you’ll need to check your vehicle’s value in either the Kelly Blue Book or NADA Guide. You’ll then need to obtain a surety bond worth double your car’s value from a bond provider licensed to operate in Florida. Have the company assist you in filling out the bond form.

Complete the affidavit form with all the required information about the vehicle, along with an explanation of why you do not have a title for the vehicle.

When your application has been completed, you must submit it, along with the required fees and proof of identity (this may include a driver’s license or other identification card), to your nearest Florida tax collector’s office.
