The Department of Transportation’s Freight Transportation Services Index gained new ground in March, which is the second month of increases. The index jumped by 1.6%.

The level for March 2013 is 116.7, which is 3% higher than March 2013. It’s also very close to the record 117.7 from November 2013. The index was at 114.9 in February.

Pipeline was the only mode of transportation that did not see an increase. Trucking and rail were the modes that experienced the biggest boost.

The freight index is a combination of the measures of freight in tons and ton-miles. It follows the monthly changes in the freight amounts of the for-hire freight transportation industry. The data comes from rail, inland waterways, pipelines, trucking and air freight and is analyzed as well by mode of transportation.
