March saw 19,000 new jobs in construction

Unemployment in the construction industry fell to 11.3% last month, which is an improvement from February when it was at 12.8%. The added jobs are 19,000, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics’ latest report.

Compared to March last year, this is a great sign, as unemployment back then was at the considerably higher 14.7%.

Specialty contractors added the biggest amount of jobs, namely, 10,500. Building construction employees increased with 5,300, while heavy civil engineering grew with 3,200 new jobs.  All construction fields actually increased their employment levels, only at different rates.

The unemployment rate for the U.S. in general remains 6.7%. There were 192,000 new jobs added across all industries.
